Minimal Perfection
That is my goal: minimal perfection. With the slightest modulations of shading, a three dimensionality reveals itself. One wall becomes two. But it's the same wall. I must remind you that this painting is perfectly flat. A simple shadow creates a second, floating object. Highlights and shadows. When asked "How do you do that?" my answer is always, "Highlights and shadows." Simple, yet true.
Minimal Squares by Nolan Haan
Artists have several tricks to make a flat surface show depth. Generally, objects in the distance are painted smaller, in lighter shades, and with less detail. Cooler colors recede, while warmer colors advance. The artist's arsenal.
When painting in tones of gray, my options are more limited. Tonal values are key. I love the challenge, and I hope you like the results.
Even if you're not into minimalism, or cinder blocks, you've got to admit this is pretty cool. Hopefully I've made converts out of a few of you. Much love.
